Care Un eashed :
Double the Care, Double the Love
For Sue Aikman and Steve
Koons, their commitment to the
SPCA of Texas has always been
rooted in action. Long before
Care Unleashed became a vision
for expansion on the Stephens
Greth Foundation Campus, Steve
and Sue were a part of Team
Purple, showing up as volunteers,
caregivers, advocates, and
champions for animals in need.
Sue’s volunteer journey began
decades ago, and when she
returned after retirement,
she found a place defined by
compassion and hope. She
spoke about animals arriving
from difficult circumstances
and finding new beginnings
through the dedication of the
staff. “Many of these animals
come from tough situations, and
here they get a new beginning,
a second chance,” she shared.
She described what makes the
SPCA of Texas so special: “From
the moment they arrive, there’s
no brown dog in the yellow pod or
dog A2478. They’re Cooper, Bingo,
or Don Quixote, each with a name,
a story, and a life that matters.”
Steve and Sue have volunteered in
countless ways, always stepping
in where help is needed most.
Steve is often in the surgery
suite, caring for animals as they
wake from anesthesia after spay
or neuter surgery. Sue’s time is
frequently spent at the Russell E.
Dealey Animal Rescue Center and
throughout The Addy Foundation
Animal Recovery Center, walking
dogs, supporting the animal care
team, and making sure each
animal feels seen and valued.
Together, they have cuddled
animals who needed comfort,
celebrated every tail wag and
quiet purr, and watched families
fall in love and adopt their new
best friends.
Their hands-on experience led
naturally to deeper investment.
Steve and Sue are generous, lead
donors to the Capital Campaign,
Care Unleashed, including the
naming of the Steven Koons &
Sue Aikman Surgery Center within
the expanded campus. Care
Unleashed will double the SPCA
of Texas’ capacity, expanding
medical, surgical, and recovery
spaces so more animals can heal,
recover, and find homes. Steve
put that hope and responsibility
into words: “This building is a
promise. A promise that animals
will receive loving, respectful care
and a chance to blossom into who
they were meant to be.”
They give because they have seen
the impact with their own eyes.
They volunteer because they
are part of this team. Through
their leadership and generosity,
Steve and Sue are helping build a
brighter future for animals, people,
and the community, one caring
act at a time.
